According to IC Insights, for 2016, the pure-play foundry market is expected to increase by 9% and greatly outperform the growth rate of total IC market, which is forecast to drop by 2% this year. 2016 the “Big 4” pure-play foundries (i.e., TSMC, GlobalFoundries, UMC, and SMIC) are forecast to hold an imposing 84% share of the total worldwide pure-play IC foundry market.  As shown, TSMC is expected to hold a 58% market share in 2016. Microsoft revealed HoloLens chip, Holographic Processing Unit (HPU). The HPU is a custom-designed chip with a 28nm processor by TSMC that has 24 Tensilica DSP (digital signal processor) cores. Samsung Electronics is changing its strategy on semiconductor foundry business from mass-production of small amount of goods to small amount of production of variety of goods. According to Digitimes, Primax Electronics has increased production capacity of its compact camera modules (CCMs) by 10%, with production of 12 million units a month, of which 70% are 13MP models.
