Connectivity

The millimeter wave refers to an electromagnetic wave having a wavelength of 1~10mm and a frequency of 30~300GHz. Due to the lack of frequency resources below 6GHz, it is difficult to find continuous large bandwidth to meet 5G system requirements (eMBB, mMTC, URLLC), while the millimeter wave band can build a very large bandwidth communication system up to 800MHz, communication rate up to 10Gbit/s, 3GPP’s technical report on the millimeter-wave channel model in 2016 clarifies the feasibility of the millimeter-wave band as the 5G outdoor communication band. (TF Securities report)

The main impact factors in designing 5G millimeter wave antenna performance are: mid-frame design / material, high-complex screen ratio, transmission path loss between RFIC and millimeter-wave antenna array, millimeter-wave antenna array material, etc. Antenna solutions include: AoB, AiP, AiM, AoC, AiP, etc.. Under the consideration of cost, yield, loss, miniaturization and other factors, the current main solution for millimeter wave antennas is AiP, which has been used in Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. AiP industry chain structure: 1) module design: Qualcomm, Samsung; 2) manufacturing: TSMC; 3) packaging and testing: ASE, USI (the millimeter wave band has more test procedures than the sub 6GHz chip module).
