Dr. Chris Eliasmith, a theoretical neuroscientist and co-CEO of Canadian AI startup Applied Brain Research, is confident that a new type of chip is betting on the proliferation of ‘neuromorphics’ — a type of computer chip that is not yet widely known but already being developed by several major chip makers. Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SMIC) is looking to start R&D for 7nm process technology later in 2017, according to company CEO and executive director Tzu-Yin Chiu.

Mobile phone panels inventory is high, and pull-in is weak in China, causing the price drop, especially for a-Si panel. In early 2017, price of a-Si panel is dropping, in 1Q17 the drop rate is 15%, and in 2Q17 it would be continue with double-digit drop rate. HannStar and CPT have enjoyed big profit in 4Q16, but because of the price drop, in 1Q17 the profit is small, and in 2Q17 they might be facing lose. (China Times, Laoyaoba)

According to Digitimes, Huawei reportedly will have only 8% of its total production of smartphones featuring AMOLED panels in 2017 due to an insufficient supply. About 70% of global output of OLED panels in 2017-2018, mainly from Samsung Display, will be consumed by Samsung and Apple, therefore limiting the supply of OLED panels to other vendors. Canalys forecasts the smartwatch market will grow 18% in 2017, with 28.5M units being shipped. This will mean the total value of smartwatch shipments in 2017 will reach USD10B.
